Thermal AnalysisThe purpose of thermal analysis is to calculate the temperature profile of a part or assembly when subject to a heat load. This is done by taking into account conduction through the materials and convection across the fluid-solid boundaries. In order to do this one needs to specify the material's thermal properties, and also to know or estimate the heat transfer coefficients (film coefficients) at all the relevant surface boundaries, taking into account the temperature of that fluid and whether it is a liquid or a gas and how fast it is flowing. If it is also necessary to find the expansion or contraction of the part and the thermal stresses that might arise, then a second stage will be necessary, which is to perform a structural analysis, using the tempertures that have just been calculated as inputs to the structural analysis.
