Strategy Roadmaps

What is roadmapping?

Roadmapping was pioneered by Motorola in the 1970s as a tool for planning and showing the direction and steps along the way of a company's strategic or technological journey (or both).

The idea is that this visual device aids the process of setting the strategy in the first place and then of showing it and explaining it to others in a way that is easily understood.

In doing a roadmap, there are 3 key questions to be answered;-

bulletWhere are we now?
bulletWhere do we want to go?
bulletHow can we get there?

The X-axis is usually time, but the Y-axis can contain as many different 'views' or perspectives as are necessary. A simple version is shown below.

There is no 'right' way of doing this, it depends upon the company and the context, but if you would like to discuss doing roadmaps in your company, please contact us.
