Design for Six Sigma

The Six Sigma process that gets all the press is primarily centred around manufacturing or transactional processes to ensure that a current design or process is made or performed in the best possible way.

Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a process to ensure that the design can actually be made to 6-Sigma standards. After all you can tweak the manufacturing process all you like, but if the design fundamentally is not up to it, then it will all be a waste of time.

The process that is most often used in traditional (manufacturing or transactional) Six Sigma is called DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control). A different approach is called for in DFSS; Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, Verify, or DMADV for short.

Then there a number of tools that can be used to make sure that the design is going to be suitable

bulletTo meet the customer's needs (QFD)
bulletTo be manufacturable, at the quality targets specified (DFMA, Tolerance Analysis, DoE)
bulletTo be robust and avoid failure (FMEA, FEA)
bulletTo meet other requirements, such as serviceability, environmental requirements etc. (DFX)
